The Hasmonean Kingdom of Israel (Established::140 BC–Dissolved::37 BC) in ancient Judea and its ruling dynasty, the Hasmoneans (Hebrew: חשמונאים, Khāshmōnaīm), were established under the leadership of Simon Maccabeus, two decades after his brother, Judas Maccabeus, defeated the Seleucid army in 165 BC. It survived for over 100 years as an autonomous state before becoming a client Kingdom of the Roman Empire in 37 BC.
