Alexander:

The Russian site is now active.

To see what I've made it look like:

  1. Navigate to the Main Page here on the English site.
  2. Look down at the bottom of the sidebar. You will see a language link reading "Russian."
  3. Follow that link.

As you will see, I have begun by adapting your work. I am not finished yet; I have much more to do. Sadly, I must reserve the layout to me and to other administrators. But I intend to preserve the links you made to the articles that you had started work on.

And I'd like to show you another thing I did:

  1. Navigate to Redshift.
  2. Look for the Russian language link.
  3. Follow it.

You will see the work that you had so far done to translate the Redshift article--except that now it will be on the Russian site.

I made one change: I removed the tiny images intended to reproduce the mathematical formulas. Long ago we installed the Math extension of MediaWiki, so I recreated those equations using "math" tags.

I also added an English language link at the bottom, and also created Category links. When you translate an article, we ask that you create categories for it that mirror the categories on the English site. With your knowledge of the MediaWiki engine, you should find that task easy to perform.

You had also started to translate the articles on Creation and Creationist. Now you are free to move that work on to the Russian site and continue your work there.

You need never reload an image! All images are on the Media Archive (or if they are not, I can move them there, as I did with the images for Redshift).

We (the administration) still have much to do. And eventually I would like to show you how to use our Semantic MediaWiki system. You can see an example of what that system can do by reading a few annotated articles, like Earth, Sun, Jupiter, and Voyager 2.

1) I've created some categories, templates and other useful things.

2) Sadly, I have not rights to edit the Main Page of Russian Site, but is it necessary for adding/editing old and new links. In present, all links are created as redirecting for correct page. :-(

3) Please describe "Semantic MediaWiki system" in details, I'm not understand.

4) What about subject portals, I can't see it, right now.

5) Please, look at these talk pages (1, 2, 3) and protect the templates (as requested).

6) Personal question: What do you think about Hovind's ministry and about Kent's conviction?

Dear Alexander (or Aleksandr, as I believe your name transliterates into Russian):

1) I've seen some of your work. I believe you have it linked to your Russian user page. In this regard: You should remember to place language links at the bottom of anything you translate from the English site, so that I may be sure of what you are trying to duplicate and can jump back and forth between versions. The form of a language link is the language code ("en" for English, "ru" for Russian, "de" for German, "fr" for French, etc.), then a colon, then the name of the item in the other language. All this must be enclosed in double brackets. You may study the links I left at the bottom of the article Redshift and its Russian equivalent.

2) Main pages have definite conventions that both of us must follow. I see that you have created several templates for use in the Main Page. I need to know what those are, and their English equivalents. I can place language links as appropriate, and then incorporate them into a standard Main Page layout. Be advised that the Main Page uses the following templates:

Template:Featured article Template:Featured picture Template:News

Main pages other than the English main page also require a template, which in English is spelled "menu," for some of the most common articles. Please see fr:Modèle:Menu for details.

In addition, the templates called in English "Featured article" and "Featured picture" always include links to specific categories for featured articles and featured pictures. These serve as our archives for featured items.

(The English word "feature" as the noun or the verb actually means "promotion" or "to promote." Please feel free to give this concept a proper Russian name. All I ask is that you tell me what it is, so that I may place language links to its English equivalent.)

I'll have to look at the other templates you have created and see how to use them on the Main Page.

3) To start to learn about "Semantic MediaWiki," please begin reading at Help:Semantics. I will try to update some of the external links as soon as possible.

4) As I mentioned before, subject portals will have to wait until the Russian site is better populated. The standard that we follow is that a subject must have twenty articles in it before it is worthy of a portal. When you have translated twenty articles on any given subject, I will ask Mr. Ashcraft to help create a portal logo, and then you and I can build a portal for that subject, and build the navigational toolbar.

5) I'll follow those links as soon as I can. Be advised, however, that once I protect a template, even you may not edit it; only I may edit it. Let us work together and build the Main Page as it should be, and then I hope to have you translating more articles.

6) I respect Kent Hovind almost as much as I respect any other creationist. He acted foolishly in challenging the government's authority to collect taxes from him. St. Paul told everyone to pay taxes (literally, tribute) to those to whom such sums are due. Mr. Hovind evidently thought that St. Paul's example of challenging the Roman tribune's decision to examine him under torture was a proper example of how to deal with the tax authority. I disagree. Now his witness is damaged, as noncreationists simply have an excuse to dismiss anything he says, purely on account of his conviction for tax evasion.

In closing: Your work on the site's main page is very much appreciated. But I want to start you in translating articles as soon as possible. And when you do: I appreciate your placing links to English-language articles. But eventually I would like you to translate those articles into Russian and then link to the Russian-language articles. As long as you can keep track of the links you place, I can approve of what you are now doing, so long as we both understand that this is only temporary. That aside, I encourage you to translate whatever articles are most interesting to you.

In addition, I might, from time to time, ask you to help me translate some short system messages, so long as this does not detract from your translation of articles. I won't ask you to translate articles on Policy unless and until you can recruit more Russian editors to help populate the Russian site. But I would suggest one other article that you ought to build a Russian version of: CreationWiki:Current events. You should fill that article with events of interest to creationists in Russia. Please do not worry about translating listings of events on the English site, unless you believe that a Russian might be interested in attending any of those events.

You may if you wish translate any article to which the Sidebar provides a link. But again: the creation and translation of articles is your first priority, after we finish building the Main Page.

As an editor, you have the right to create and edit articles, your user page (and I thank you for your improvement to my user page), templates, Help pages, categories, essays, and Semantic MediaWiki properties, types, and concepts. You also may create and edit any Talk page. Only the Main Page and the MediaWiki namespace remain closed to you.

We ask that you upload all images to the common Media Archive. I moved your image to that Archive an hour ago. In that manner you may use that same image on your User page here on the English site as well as on the Russian one. For the moment I have directed that you have the sole right to use your photograph to illustrate your user page and autobiography. If you are comfortable in releasing your photograph under the GNU Free Documentation License, we ask that you make a declaration on the image page in the Media Archive. You may make it both in English and in Russian.

Postscript:

As of this moment, I have incorporated your Main Page templates into the Main Page. This will give you more control over the content of the page, though the layout remains in my hands.

For now, your template describing your current projects can remain. Later on, we can build the Community Portal and Help Wanted pages, which are better pages for such a list of projects.

The Main Page could use the following equivalent templates:

Once we have these, I will lay out the Main Page to include these templates.

You will need to take your listings for the articles and essays that you have written and place these inside a template. Then I can use that template in the new layout. You may name this template however you prefer. I suggest the Russian equivalent of the English term "menu" as it is used in information technology. Also, how do you say this in Russian: "Menu of articles."

If you have trouble with certain English words, please contact me on my User Talk page, on either the English or the Russian site; I watch them both. I noticed that the English concept "glow" puzzled you. "Glow" is a synonym for "shine", except that "shine" connotes giving enough light to see by, while "glow" connotes merely giving off enough light to call attention to itself.

Hello dear Temlakos.

I understand, that the main aim is useful material, and I will take endeavor on translating and reading articles. Thank for your suggested help with translating. Than I don't understand one of the word I am using the vocabulary (e.t.c StarDict), but the trouble can be in understanding of all sentence or paragraph (piece of text).

About the word "Featured", [wrote] that the best meanings is Избранный (Selected), other offer is Интересный or Хороший or Примечательный (interesting, good, noteworthy).

For the future, other translations: - "Help wanted" is needed to translate as "Требуется помощь" - Discussion is Обсуждение проекта - Subject portals - Тематические порталы - Community is сообщество - Community Portal is Портал сообщества - Menu is Меню, but the best translation will be 'Список' (listing) in this case. So "Menu of articles" will be Список статей. Шаблон:Список статей

For the first time, my suggestion is to comment my operations on the talk pages (of articles, pages, tepmplates, e.t.c) in the English for you and other English-speaking users. After that it will be delete, may be.

The best word to substitute for the English word "featured" is "selected." So let's build these templates:

When building the selected article template, start with your translation of the article on "redshift." I like that one best of all. The second article to include is yours to decide. I have two suggestions:

  1. Complete the translation of en:Creation.
  2. Translate an article that I wrote yesterday, on a concept closely related to redshift: en:Dark energy.

Either one will do.

As to selected images, please look through the Media Archive and select the two images that appeal to you best of all.

Note that each template has its own category for items that we have selected in the past.

Note also how we mark an article or image as having been selected. See en:Template:Feature article and en:Template:Feature picture--those are the templates that we apply to articles and pictures. To apply it to an image, we create a page for that image in the same site where we have done the selection. The image itself stays in the Media Archive, but you can still create a descriptive page for it in the language-specific site.

I like the idea of a "listing of articles" template. Please copy your present list of articles into that template so that I can include it in the layout.

The News template will go under a heading called "Газета". Please include any items of news of interest to other Russian readers; don't worry about translating news items from our English "gazette." You will notice that the English en:Template:News contains a navigation routine to find other templates containing news related to many other subjects. You need not translate those right away, but as you begin translating other articles that include those templates, you can translate the templates and add items of news that appear in Russian media.

More advice

Alexander: Thank you for preparing the templates. I have used them to build the Main Page layout.

I must urge you to shorten your Gazeta. The standard listing is not more than two lines in the editing window, so that not more than four lines per item show up on the Main Page display. Then end the listing with an external link to the news item. You may then grow the Gazeta with listings that are up to one year old. Try to imitate the style of the English version. Keep all news items in chronological order, beginning with the newest and ending with the oldest.

Everything else looks fine, and it makes a wonderful layout. And in this way, you can maintain control of the various contents.

The Main Page is the only page that we contemplate protecting.

I appreciate your translating the Terms of Service, and leaving the Russian language link at the bottom of the English version. In future, whenever you translate any article, please leave a language link in the English version so that I may know now to find it. I can run the "new pages" script to find any new articles that you create.

I suspect that you had difficulty with the English word "flagellum." That word refers to a part of a cell that gives it locomotion (that is, allows it to move on its own). The word derives from the Latin word for a whip.

You will notice that the article Planet has a number of template-like constructs and "operators" with which you are not familiar. Allow me to explain:

The {{#ask}} construct is a semantic in-line query. It is part of Semantic MediaWiki.

The :: construct is the semantic assignment operator.

For details, please see Help:Semantics, Help:Semantic annotation, and Help:Semantic inline queries. You might also visit the official Semantic MediaWiki site. As of now, that site is translated into German and French. But the project does have a user's group. Apply here for details. For further details on how to get help from the developers of the Semantic MediaWiki extension, please see here.

You are not required to use semantic query constructs and operators yet--not until you would like to learn how to use the semantic system. We have plenty of articles that do not use semantic annotation. When you want to translate an article using extensive annotation, you might find that much of the annotation is in one or more templates. See, for example, Earth.

I suggest that you implement on the Russian site your own version of Help:Sandbox. That will give you a place to experiment with complete freedom--or as much freedom as a wiki site allows to a user who is not an administrator. Please also see Help:Practice page. The difference is that the Practice Page contains certain experiments that remain, so that new editors can learn how to use certain features. Happily, your command of MediaWiki editing is excellent. These are suggestions to allow you to gain advanced practice, and also to enhance the help system so that, if you can recruit other Russian editors, they can become as proficient as you are.

I further suggest that when you translate an article, watch it. The article might change. Happily, that does not happen often.

War in Georgia, etc.

Dear Alexander:

Please do not imagine that I or any other administrator of CreationWiki has anything against you personally on account of the recent outbreak of war in Georgia.

I am far more interested in encouraging you to resume your editorial and translation efforts on our site.

I gather, from your decision to translate the redshift article, that cosmology is your area of interest. You also noticed my recent articles on dark energy and dark matter, though I don't think you had translated those. You might therefore be interested in our article on the theory known as the big bang.

Be advised also: Recently Mr. Ashcraft created several navigation templates to promote articles describing the most important concepts in various subject areas, like creation, cosmology, evolution, and science and its subject areas of astronomy/cosmology, biology, and chemistry. Because you are an experienced MediaWiki webmaster and developer, I trust that you can easily translate those templates and implement them on the Russian site. Those templates will also serve as a guide to the most important articles that we would like to see translated into as many languages as possible.

Now as regards the war: A full treatment of this war would be beyond the scope of CreationWiki. But long ago I wrote an article, titled Russia, in which I tried to give a comprehensive history of Russia, from its beginnings as ancient Scythia to the Soviet Union and after. I invite you to review it and tell me what corrections or additions I ought to make in it. (Or you can make those corrections and additions yourself, if you feel comfortable writing in English for an English readership.) You may if you wish comment on the recent war on that article.

Then I'd like to recommend one of two things:

  1. Translate my article into Russian, or
  2. Write the history of Russia, both ancient and modern, in your own words.

The history of even a "modern" country is well within the scope of CreationWiki if either or both of two conditions obtain:

  1. The country has ancient roots, preferably traceable to the Noahide Table of Nations (Genesis 10 ).
  2. The country is famous for the scientists born in it, the scientific discoveries made in it, or its present attitudes (favorable or unfavorable) toward the promulgation of the creationist message.

Both of these conditions definitely apply to Russia, in addition to our decision to open a version of CreationWiki in Russian. To the above I would add this: many Bible commentators identify Russia as the lead aggressor in a future attack by an anti-Semitic coalition against Israel as outlined in Ezekiel 38-39 . Any comment on whether that claim has any justice would definitely be welcome.

As you can see, I have quite a vision for the site. As ever, you can always ask Mr. Ashcraft or me for any assistance.
