Ecclesiasticus
Ecclesiasticus (Hebrew: ספר בן סירא, Sēfer Ben-Sirā; Greek: Σοφία Σειράχ, Sophia Seirach; Latin: Liber Ecclesiasticus), written by Ben Sira, also known as Sirach, The Wisdom of Jesus son of Sirach, and The Wisdom of Ben Sira is one of the Deuterocanonical books included in the Septuagint that is considered canonical by Roman Catholic and Eastern Orthodox Christians, but apocryphal by Protestants.
Date and authorship
The book was probably written about 180 B.C.[1] or earlier and it was written in Hebrew.[2] About two-thirds of the Hebrew text was recovered in manuscripts found in a Genizah of Cairo, Egypt,[3] after a English scholar, Solomon Schechter, had access to a page of the original Hebrew manuscripts.[4] The author was Jesus (or Joshua) ben Sira and his grandson, a professional scribe and teacher, translated into Greek, c. 130 B.C.[2]
Canonicity
Augustine of Hippo has pronounced by its canonicity, although Jerome conferred a lesser importance than the normal books of the Hebrew canon.[5] The Concil of Trent included the book of Ecclesiasticus formally in the Roman Catholic canon.[5]
