symbols

Is there a reason for preferring ♅ over ⛢? I'd think the scientific one would be preferable. ⇔ ChristTrekker 13:42, 18 October 2011 (PDT)

The reason is simple: the symbol you used is unreadable. I could not resolve it on my browser, and still can't.

It is a Unicode symbol, as of version 6.0 from last year, along with some other new ones for astro. You have a font support issue. There are fonts now that support the new characters, albeit not widely known yet. ⇔ ChristTrekker 14:00, 18 October 2011 (PDT)

The problem now is: the only font that can support this particular Unicode symbol is DejaVuSans. Now how many people do you suppose know how to install DejaVuSans on their machines? Guess I hadn't really thought about it. I'm used to seeing the "unknown character" symbols occasionally, and know it means my fonts don't support whatever it was. I usually don't sweat it, because a single symbol isn't critical. Go a few years back, and you'd find plenty of fonts that didn't have ♅ either. I don't have Deja Vu on this machine, but Brampton and Squarish Sans (which I do) both have the character. ⇔ ChristTrekker 14:19, 18 October 2011 (PDT)
