Asparagus is the type genus of the family Liliaceae. All members of the family are monocots, meaning that there is only one initial leaf that emerges from the seed. Most of the Monocots are wheats, grasses, or flowers.

In 2003, the Angiosperm Phylogeny Group placed this genus within the Family Asparagaceae, order Asparagales. This revision has not been adapted by the U.S. Department of Agriculture.
