Summary

Cross-dating with narrow rings can often identify missing growth rings in trees.

Comparison of the width of growth rings from trees outside and inside the tephra-fall zone identified missing rings. Detailed study of the control trees showed 23 annual growth rings between the narrow rings of 1472 and 1495 AD, which were related to regional climatic factors, probably drought. Trees inside the tephra-fall zone, however, showed only 20 rings between the narrow rings. The series of missing and narrow rings starting with the 1482 AD ring were caused by tree injury during the fall of ash and pumice.
