Cosmos comes from the Greek word (Κοσμος), meaning "universe" or "order". It is generally used to refer to an orderly or harmonious system, as distinguished from chaos. It is typically used by astrophysicists or as a synonym for the universe because it is widely recognized that the universe is an orderly system, unlike the chaos that would be expected if it indeed originated from a Big Bang as claimed by many scientists.
