Cougars go by many names including puma, mountain lion, catamount, deer tiger, indian devil, and panther. Cougars are one of the smaller "big cats" but are one of the deadliest.  Their hunting success rate is almost double that of the other "big cats". Another thing that separates them is that the cougar can actually be as active in the day as they are at night.  They use to live almost everywhere in the Americas but they are now absent from Eastern Canada and Eastern United States.  They are the subject of many indian myths because of their ability to appear and disappear so quickly and quietly.  If one sees a human in the woods it will most likely walk in the other direction before the person even knows its there.  However, if the cougar is hungry enough it may stalk a human and even attack it.  The way a cougar attacks its prey is to stealthily stalk it and then leap onto its back from twenty feet or closer.  Then, when it has its victim down to the ground it sinks its canines into the back of the neck, killing it instantly. Cougars will eat just about anything from a deer to an insect if hungry enough.  Female cougars are able to make a high pitch noise that has been described as "demonic".2

Anatomy
Introduction
Cougars are usually seven to nine feet long but a third of that is taken up by the tail. They can weigh up to two hundred pounds and every ounce is solid muscle. Cougars are lean, agile, able to climb trees, can swim, and can hunt like none other. Cougars fur is usually a dark tan or red-brown. A cougar's senses are super keen because it has a highly developed brain. Eyesight is their sharpest sense with hearing taking a close second. That highly developed brain also allows a cougar to use rather advanced hunting tactics for an animal. That is why its hunting success rate is so much higher than other "big cats".

Reproduction
Male cougars will establish their territory and for the most part will stay within that territory.  They will mate with any female cougar in that territory.  Male cougars will usually only fight each other if one of them tresspasses on the other one's territory.  Female cougars spend about 73% of their lives taking care of kittens or being pregnant.  they will first mate when they are about two and a half years old.  They can have from one to six kittens.  The babies usually stay with their mothers for about a year and half learning all the basic survival techniques.

Cougars live all throughout the Americas except in Northern and Eastern Canada, Eastern United States, and the Carribbean.  They used to live in the Eastern United States but they were hunted mercilessly.  They are now believed to be extinct in the wild except for a tiny population in the swamps of Florida.  But, naturalists have found traces of a few cougars venturing into a couple midwest states like Iowa so they may be making a comeback.
