Property:Semi-major axis
From CreationWiki, the encyclopedia of creation science
The semi-major axis of any ellipse is half the length of the major axis, which in turn is the line segment that passes through the foci of that ellipse and joins two opposite points of the ellipse. In astronomy, the semi-major axis of an orbit is the maximum distance of the orbiting body from the center of that orbit. The center is not the location of the primary; the primary in any two-body orbit configuration is always at a focus of the orbit. The semi-major axis may be computed as the arithmetic mean of the periapsis and apoapsis.
The usual object in view is a planet or a moon, and the primary is either the sun or whatever planet the moon is orbiting. The approved units for displaying planetary distances are km,AU,mi.
