Joseph (Hebrew, "YHWH shall add"), in various forms, has been a common name throughout history.
Biblical Use
Joseph is the name of three significant characters in the Bible:
- Joseph, son of Jacob and viceroy of Egypt
- Joseph of Nazareth, foster father of Jesus Christ
- Joseph of Arimathea, a wealthy follower of Jesus Christ, in whose tomb Jesus was buried
There are other men named Joseph mentioned in the Bible (e.g. the son of Asaph, in 1 Chronicles 25:2; the son of Binnui, in Ezra 10:38; the brother of Jesus, in Matthew 13:55; and two different men in Acts 1:23 and Acts 4:36).
