Summary
According to the Big Bang theory, the universe originated in an infinitely dense singularity. Space has expanded with the passage of time, objects being moved further away from each other.
This illustration shows abstracted "slices" of space at different points in time. It is simplified as it shows only two of three spatial dimensions, to allow for the time axis to be displayed conveniently.
Note that as space is expanding, galaxies (and other structures) are moving apart, but they are not expanding themselves since they are held together locally by gravity.
