Summary
Flag of the Union of Soviet Socialist Republics. The hammer and sickle represents the "union of peasants and workers" that Karl Marx originally envisioned. The gold-outlined star represents the ascendancy of this "union" to world conquest. Every Communist government or movement has always used either a red star or a gold star on a red background as its symbol (with the possible exception of the German Democratic Republic, which used a hammer-and-divider device).
