Summary
NMML has conducted pup branding and observational studies of California sea lions for 20 years and has developed a very important long-term database to document the demography of this population through rapid growth from the 1970s through the 1990s. Recently, the growth has slowed and the population may be reaching carrying capacity. The study is at a critical juncture because for the first time in the last 3 decades (with the exception of El Nino events) pup production has stabilized.
