Summary

North Island Brown Kiwi, (Apteryx mantelli) at Rainbow Springs. Rotorua, New Zealand

Kiwis are big, but mostly nocturnal. Kiwis are flightless birds, native only to New Zealand. They have nostrils at the end of their beaks, to assist them in probing for grubs in the earth. In many places, they have been seriously threatened by the introduction of stoats, cats, rats and especially dogs to NZ; but Operation Nest Egg, a government program at Rotorua, attempts to nurse babies in a safe environment until they are big enough to defend themselves.
